Adding some tech to the sport

Wind is up but will I rig a 7 or a 9m2? Want to share the wind speed with friends to speed up to the beach? Didn't your mates believe that you could plane in marginal conditions? Just measure the wind and share it. How? Shaka has the tool for you. A windmeter gadget for you iPhone. Check it out from http://shakaon.net/.

Want to now how it went on the waves? Well that is now possible with this surfboard with some new features in it. Just imagine what kind of data we could get out from kiteboarding session.

Surfing is still a sport governed by feelings. The driving forces behind this joint project, PUKAS and TECNALIA, aim to “turn feelings into facts and figures” and provide as yet unquantified data that can be directly applied to improve the features of surfboards, the technical performance of surfers and/or measurement of parameters during competition.

The Free Ride Project (OFFICIAL MOVIE) feat: UKcrew from Tom Court on Vimeo.

The "FreeRide' Project is an idea that we had at the start of 2011. Four riders, from different brands, we started traveling together and filming how we wanted our sport to look and be represented...this is a no-mess, un-brand motivated representation of what we want kiteboarding to be and what it means to us as we travel to some of the best spots and biggest wakestyle events through the year, to just have fun and ride!

Following the year of the UK riders Aaron Hadlow, Tom Court, Sam Light and James Boulding (the UKcrew) this video goes to Australia, DR, Hood River, Fuerteventura and the Philippines, with some kiteboarding action in each spot. As well as a section in the CWC cable park during the WONW kite/cable event at the end of 2011.

Sit back and enjoy, the video will be available for free download soon. The idea being that you can burn your own DVD/movie, share it at home or play it in your shops!! Spread the word!!

A big THANKS to all involved who made this possible and helped us along the way!

REBEL.TV about kitesurfing vs windsurfing in Tarifa

When there is enough people practicing about any activity then there may be some negative side effects on top of all the good things. REBEL.TV is discussing the situation in Tarifa.

I tend to disagree that kiteboarders are not a family like windsurfers. At least where ever I have traveled most of the kiteboarders have been great. Maybe there are some exceptions when beaches get almost too crowded and people are not even trying to see the big picture how all the people in water sports love to be out there.

If there are any specific rules at any spot or just if there are other beach users, play by the rules and you will have a blast and not ruin your day on the water due to some disagreement.

Self rescue in deep water

Kiteboarding gear has evolved to much more user friendly and safe in the couple of the last years. Quick releases are better and easier to use and the kites have bigger range of use. Even the bigger range of use of the kite makes it a bit safer people tend to ride in very high winds with big kites even a smaller kite would be better for those conditions. Another case is that we can go out in much less wind than earlier and dropping wind may cause a risk to not be able to relaunch a dropped kite.

After you have made sure on the beach that you have working quick release and know how to utilize it and you use a leash every time you go out, it is important that you know the safety procedures what to do when the quick release is pulled and your kite is down on the water/snow and you need to get to it.

Self rescue is something that every kiteboarder should know no matter if you kite on the snow or on the water. It is the way to get you out from a dangerous situation if the wind drops, picks up too much for your kite, there is a gear malfunction or tangled lines and your kite cannot fly anymore.

In light winds on snow it is a bit easier if there is not too much snow as you can keep the line that is connected to a leash tight and walk to the kite by avoiding the loose lines.

On the water and in deep snow loose lines cause a bigger risk to tangle onto you when you swim/walk close to them. That is why deep water self rescue is made so that the lines are winded to the bar. This is also safe way to do on snow/land.

In the next video the self rescue is explained and showed. It is not enough that you know it in theory. It is highly important that you try it by yourself on the beach and on the water every now and then.

Looking back in time

The year was 1998. Kitesurfing had just started to pick up people's interest and the first kitesurfing worlds has been hosted in Hawaii. It was the time when even the pros were struggling to ride upwind. Well it may take some more effort to learn with the gear they had, but all the good thing have started somewhere. I think we all can give kudos to Robby, Don, Flash, Pete and Lou and all the riders that took the time and pushed the sport further and so far it has come.
